Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the 1865 emancipation of slaves in Texas, and across the Confederate South, during the Civil War. This painting by Eastman Johnson celebrates the slaves who took action before the Emancipation Proclamation to liberate themselves by crossing over to Union lines during the confusion leading up to battle. His image of a man, woman, a child, and a baby riding across an open field toward the guns and smoke of the Northern troops was based on an incident he witnessed in Virginia.
